The Sincerity of West Guadalcanal

While many tourists flocked the streets of Honiara from the Cruise Ship "Dawn Princess" on Saturday (24th Sept, 2016), quite a number of us decided to escape the heat of the city and headed down the western end of the island of Guadalcanal to enjoy the entire day.

While I used the occasion as a way to recharge my batteries, I found time to bond with my friends and catch up on incomplete conversations left over from our previous outings.

Unfortunately our ride down west was spoiled by the many potholes dotting the only highway that connects the area to the city, but that uncomfortable experience was quickly compensated for by the beautiful scenery outside.

hours." Photo: Harold Maesulia.
And of course one needs to be reminded that the environment on that side of the island only gets better the further you drive.

From the uncrowded beaches to the beautiful towering hills in the backdrop, there's a lot of interesting things to satisfy your adventurous eyes while you're out there in rural Guadalcanal.

Some of my friends who went as far as the Visale area said that they've never met any group of genuine people on the island who are just so excited about talking to us total strangers.

And it makes sense when some people say- "if you want to see the real beauty of Solomon Islands, you have to forget about Honiara."

We had lunch at the old Doma station and the beautiful beach (pictured) was ours for a couple of hours before we headed back to town.
